I have a couple of names of different cities/villages from a data set created using 100 year old documents. I would like to geocode these villages (i.e. assigning coordinates) but the addresses are outdated. Many of the administrative areas are not valid anymore.

However, I have shapefiles describing the administrative areas where my villages are located from that time.

Is it possible to use these shapes in order to geocode the village names?

I am thinking of a tool similar to https://geocoder.readthedocs.io/ where only locations within a given shape are considered.

Another way is if anyone knows of an API where it is possible to limit the search to a boundary box. Then I can simply get the boundary box of each shape and take it from there.
