So I've been looking for the past 2 days and haven't found any good reliable sources. I've been on OSM a ton and it seems that everything is a different standard. Some cities themselves are as big as a metro area, some are categorized as a state or region themselves. I'm just looking to see if anyone has a data set of say the top 100 metro areas by population shapefile.

If it is open data that you seek then I think the place to ask is the Open Data Stack Exchange. – PolyGeo May 16 at 20:33
  • Did you see the 'urban areas' layer in Natural Earth? naturalearthdata.com/downloads/10m-cultural-vectors – DPSSpatial May 16 at 21:42
  • I looked there and unfortunately they were not good quality, I guess just comparing them to US examples. For the US you can find a list of clear cut counties and municipalities that are included in metro areas. Around the world not so much. – Local Kid_GIS May 17 at 21:05
