I have a large raster and want to analyze it on smaller subsets but also want to save space so I am trying to avoid actually tiling the raster.

Is there a way to make virtual tiles that python can read and treat as separate rasters?

I found this answer to Splitting .tif image into several tiles? that mentions this is possible using gdalbuildvrt.

  • If you're using python and gdal (or rasterio), you don't need to tile (even virtual tiles), just read the raster in chunks. Look at the offset parameters for the ReadAsArray method. – user2856 Jul 9 '19 at 23:50
