Is there a way to calculate the area of a cross section (blue zone on the graph below)in QGIS without creating new layers ? Like a more complex version of the profile tool which would calculate this area from a digitized line?

I guess you've solved by now :) Anyway, I found useful to export the profile in .dxf (see the bottom of the profile tool) and load it in QGis or Globalmapper. In both softwares there is a measure tool and you can just redraw the boundary of your area of interest and get the area.
