I've been trying to display a KML file with Openlayers, which I created with Google Earth. It is a simple polygon with white outline and 50% alpha black filling.

In Openlayers it displays as a white, filled polygon, no matter what kind of styles I apply to it in Google Earth.

I have no errors or warnings, the KML just seems to miss out the styles. I use Openlayers 6. What am I missing here?

My Implementation using OL:

const file = functionThatReturnsUploadedFileFromFileInput();
const reader = new FileReader();
const vectorLayer = functionThatReturnsVectorLayerFromMap();

reader.onload = function () {
    var
        source = new VectorSource({
            url: reader.result,
            format: new KML({extractStyles: true})
        });

    vectorLayer.setSource(source);

}
reader.readAsDataURL(file);

The KML generated by Google Earth:

<kml xmlns="http://www.opengis.net/kml/2.2" xmlns:gx="http://www.google.com/kml/ext/2.2" xmlns:kml="http://www.opengis.net/kml/2.2" xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom">

The CascadingStyle tag isn't supported, but this works

\s*</.*?cascadingstyle>/gmi, "");

    // ... remove more tags eventually

    return result;
}

Most likely not the most solid and elegant solution, however, it seems to work.

  • I've seen in the wild that <gx:CascadingStyle /> tags might also be followed by <styleUrl /> tags, and other \s*</.*?cascadingstyle>/gim, "");

    // fix dataURIs (replace -_ with +/ and add padding if necessary)
    result = result.replace(this.base64Regex, (a, b) => {
      const withPadding =
        b.length % 4 !== 0
          ? (a += Array.from({ length: 4 - (b.length % 4) }, () => "=").join(
              ""
            ))
          : a;
      return withPadding.replaceAll("-", "+").replaceAll("_", "/");
    });

    return result;
  }
}
