This may be a poorly worded question, because I am not sure of the exact terminology, but I'll give it a shot.

I have imported a vector layer from a WMS server into QGIS. I am able to query the objects on this layer with the Identify tool and get (most of the time) information about that object.

I have another (local) layer of points that I've created. I would like to automate that query process such that a new attribute is created in the point layer from a query to the WMS at that point.

I can't find any information on this, but if the data is made available to the Identify tool my logic tells me that this should be possible. I think I am lacking the appropriate search terms. Any help is appreciated.

  • Sorry I'm not more clear. I don't want to save or modify a WMS layer. I want to extract some data to another local vector layer. This data can be seen when I manually click on a feature in the WMS using the "Identify Features" tool. I'm wondering how to do this automatically. I am not sure if I understood your case correctly (I could not understand the data flow direction). However one keyword that might be useful is WFS (Web Feature Service). If you want to update/modify an underlying data set of a WMS you will probably end up with WFS (or even WFS-T).

  • Thanks for the reply, but I do not want to update or modify the WMS. I only want to extract data from it. When I click with the Identify tool it lists attributes from the underlying feature. I could (theoretically) click on each area I'm interested in and manually write that attribute down, but there has to be a better way. Right? – Kris Feb 2 '13 at 7:26
  • Normally if you are interested in underlying data then it means you need WFS. There is only one method in WMS which might me helpful and it is GetFeatureInfo. It will give your attribute (feature) info of a vector that you point at. So basically you need x,y parameters for able to use it. If you know which point you are interested in (for instance center of a vector) then you can fetch the attribute information of that vector. Probably Identify tool that you mention is doing that.
