3/26/2014 - Since writing this question, a patch has been released.

It can be found here: http://support.esri.com/en/downloads/patches-servicepacks/view/productid/160/metaid/2003

The bing basemap seems to have been recently removed from the "Add Basemap" dialogue in ArcMap. I'm using 10.1. I've also heard reports from a coworker that a bing basemap layer was replaced by the dreaded red exclamation mark in an existing document she was using.

Any idea if bing/ esri altered their relationship, or is this just a local problem on my end?

Thank you!

I heard a rumor from our head GIS guy, but there's very little online about it -- the only link I could find with a quick google is here. So in short, yes, Bing Maps is being phased out. – Erica Mar 25 '13 at 16:06

I received an email from ESRI with the same information in Erica's link. I can add that Bing has been removed from the basemap options on our machines running 10.1, but is still available on our 10.0 machines. By 'phasing out' I guess they mean arbitrarily removing the service from certain versions with little to no warning.... – JWallace Mar 25 '13 at 16:09
  • Great link @Erica, for some reason I missed that in my quick search. Thank you! – Paul Mar 25 '13 at 16:23
  • @JWallace, "little to no warning" is right :) Thank you! – Paul Mar 25 '13 at 16:23
  • Or use QGIS and have the tiles available at no cost. gis.stackexchange.com/questions/20191/… – Mapperz Mar 26 '13 at 13:39

Microsoft and esri will no longer provide the free service.

What's New for Arcgis Online March 2013 Register Bing Map key—Organizations who want to include Bing Maps in their map viewer basemap gallery can add a Bing Map key to their map configuration. This is related to the phasing out of complimentary use of Bing Maps. For more information, see Configuring the map.

  • Thank you Brad. In my opinion, your answer is missing the esri requirements for use of the Bing maps key (as noted in the link from Erica above). Unfortunately for 10.1 users these requirements include upgrading to ArcMap 10.1.2 which is currently not available. Please add those software requirements and remove the bing maps service update which doesn't apply in this case so that I can accept your answer. – Paul Mar 25 '13 at 16:45

Your information is incorrect.

There is a patch available for 10.1 users, allowing proper use of Bing Keys to obtain the Bing Basemap.

To obtain the Bing Key, an MSDN / Bing account is required for gathering either the 90 day free trial or a Basic (paid) or Enterprise (paid) subscription.

Try reading this about the key types.
