I am creating a GeoServer 2.4.1 store with GeoTiffs using the Image Mosaic Plugin and I get the following error when pressing the button

Could not list layers for this store, an error occurred retrieving them:
Failed to create reader from file://C:\Geoserver Rasters\GeoTiffs\ and hints null

The Shape File describing the GeoTiffs IS Created in the directory.

I have tied with a single GeoTiff as well as multile files, same error.

I CAN create a store with the single tif file using the GEOTIFF Raster Data Store successfully but when using the ImageMosaic Plugin, it fails

Is there a problem with the file? How to I get these GeoTiff Files to display?

  • Have the same problem running GS 2.15.0 on a OpenShift volume. Somethings that I tried without success: - Run container as root / tomcat as root - Changed permissions of volume to 777 - Setting data files in another container with different path - Hostname translates to a proper IP – Jorge Mendes Apr 22 at 8:57

Check the file system permissions for your data directory.

Your servlet container like Tomcat or jetty needs to be able to read AND write files in the directory.

I had the same error using linux bu after correcting the permissions for that specific directory (chown -R tomcat7:tomcat ) everything was fine.

  • Making the directory writable by the tomcat process worked for me. The code attempts to make DIRNAME.(dbf, prj, properties, shp, and shx) filesin the directory, and when it can't it produces this error string. – Dave X Jul 4 '15 at 0:15

Try to put your geotiffs in a directory like this:

...\webapps\geoserver\data\data\myGeoTiffs

Much more, when creating you store, put this in the Connection Parameters URL:

file:data/myGeoTiffs

I've tried also to reproduce your error on my systems but I wasn't able to do it. (In my case everything works well even when I load the tiffs from anywhere outside the GeoServer data directory).

I think there could be another two possible causes:

1) Something wrong with your data:

Therefore, is it possible for you to upload on dropbox.com a zip with your data to be tested outside your computer? If it loads ok on mine computer then your ImageMosaic Plugin could be incompatible with your GeoServer version.

2) If the error appears again, then maybe the GeoTiffs wasn't properly produced:

In this case:

a) You could use gdal_translate, which could clean up the errors in the GeoTiffs headers.

b) Another approach would be to produce a vrt for your tiles. I've upload already such a mosaic here, for you, to test it.

Also, there is possible to see important hints about the error, when you try to create the store, if you check the GeoServer log.

  • I have other GeoTiff Mosaics under file://C:\Geoserver Rasters\GeoTiffs\ that work fine .. and as I mentioned, I can create a Geotiff Store in the same directory with one single file – Mark Cupitt Feb 23 '14 at 10:01
  • It may be that Erdas has written georeferencing into geotiff tags so that Geoserver does not completely understand if. You can try to rewrite images with gdal_translate gdal_translate -of GTiff -co tiled=yes -s_srs epsg:4326 -t_srs epsg:4326 erdas_input.tif gdal_output.tif It may also have something to do with that images are paletted ones but try rewrite with gdal first. – user30184 May 20 '14 at 13:20

I had the same problem, and in my case changing the permissions(write) on the files fixed the problem.

Check this thread, it worked for me https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/geoserver-manager-users/sa1D4kRr62A

EDIT In short (I suppose the missing explanation is the reason for the down vote - please add a comment when you downvote... I'm just trying to help...), the point is if the server hostname does not resolve to an IP address (weird behavior of JAI ImageIO...) the store creation fails. Ensuring that the hostname resolved corrected the problem for me.

For me, it happened because I was using Windows file paths (with backslashes \ instead of /). Changing the url to use normal slash characters solved it for me.

For me, it was spaces in the filename that I had to remove (GeoServer v2.14) and then it worked.

I had the same problem twice. And it was two different reasons:

  1. HDD was failing and Linux set it as read only.
  2. I tried to load files from mounted HDD that had label containing the space char.
