File geodatabases are a proprietary data format created by ESRI.

The .gdb extension indicates an ESRI file structure known as the file geodatabase. Within a .gdb, ArcGIS organizes a system of files that can store data up to 1 TB of raster, vector, tabular, and other data (such as networks and feature datasets). Esri now recommends this over personal geodatabases.
