Questions about freedoms granted and restrictions applied to use of data, software, or software components, and for mechanisms used to enforce these freedoms and restrictions. When it comes to questions of legality, "what am I allowed to do with...", the GIS Stack Exchange community can and will provide answers, but it would be foolish to base decisions (solely) on them. You need to contact the company licensing department directly for definitive answers.
For a definition see Wikipedia Software License. While they differ from software licenses, most data and data use licenses use software licenses as templates.
- ArcGIS Desktop Basic License (pdf) - a commercial proprietary software license common in the GIS industry
QGIS uses the GNU Public License v3 - an open source free and libre software license
Google Maps API License for developers - a data use license where some usages are free and others are restricted (especially commercial use)
- Open Street Map copyright - another data use license, in the spirit of open source software, requiring correct attribution and sharing of changes.
