I have Geoserver running and I have an ASP.NET project which creates a SLD file dynamically, but when I try to get the style from the SLD file for a WMS layer, I get the following error in my log (set to geoserver_developer mode):

By making that request you are getting into "library mode", the SLD is treated as a style library that could have tens of styles: the "default" style you mentioned in the styles parameter is searched in the library, and not found. Works as it's supposed to :-)

  • ok, so I don't want the library mode but the just use and external sld file (docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/styling/sld/…) and to do that I remove the namedlayer tag and the following name tag, the get request url doesn't need the styles param. When I do this, the layer is displayed using the default polygon style and not my custom style from the SLD

  • sorry, I read it wrong: In all of these cases, if the WMS layers parameter is not supplied then the map content is defined completely by the layers and styles present in the external SLD. If the layers parameter is present, then styling operates in Library Mode., so I need to remove the layer parameter in the get request and used the named layer tag to get the layer?

  • If I do the above I get the error: Exception while getting SLD. org.geoserver.platform.ServiceException: Unknown layer: PandMetScore or Exception while getting SLD. org.geoserver.platform.ServiceException: Unknown layer: Local:PandMetScore when I use the environment name. What should the name of the named layer be?
