A GetCapabilities request is a mandatory operation for all OGC Web Services (OWS). A GetCapabilities response document is an XML document that provides metadata for the service. It lists all available operations, all output formats for operations, all supported coordinate reference systems and the identifiers of all layers, features or coverages etc that can be operated on.

Getting Styles in Layer Groups in GeoServer

I am able to get nested Layer Groups via WMS GetCapabilities, but each Layer Group only contains the Layers (and their associated styles) that they contain, not which Styles are associated … Part of the resulting GetCapabilities would look roughly like (omitting most irrelevant tags and attributes):
