A GetCapabilities request is a mandatory operation for all OGC Web Services (OWS). A GetCapabilities response document is an XML document that provides metadata for the service. It lists all available operations, all output formats for operations, all supported coordinate reference systems and the identifiers of all layers, features or coverages etc that can be operated on.
All the following OGC Web Services (OWS) have a GetCapabilities operation:
- Web Map Service (WMS)
- Catalogue Service (CSW)
- Web Processing Service (WPS)
- Web Feature Service (WFS)
- Web Coverage Service (WCS)
- Sensor Observation Service (SOS)
- Web Coverage Processing Service (WCPS)
- Web Map Tile Service (WMTS)
