I am having problem i converting a shapefile with label to Google Earth KML. I would like to convert a shapefile with label into KML wherein the label is retained in KML and readable. I have tried to convert the shapefile but the label in kml is unreadable.

enter image description here.

  • I think I've done this successfully at 10.2 - can you edit your question to include your version of ArcGIS for Desktop, please? Also, specify the precise tool and parameters you used. – PolyGeo Mar 16 '15 at 6:44
  • @PolyGeo: I did this in 10.1..I don't have 10.2..maybe you can teach me how you did it..sorry for the grammar – aLmer_cris Mar 16 '15 at 7:00
  • It is a shapefile made from cad (.dwg). I exported the polygon and annotation of dwg into a shapefile. – aLmer_cris Mar 16 '15 at 7:30
  • Doing a quick test just now in 10.3 at Standard level license makes me think that I probably converted the polygon centroids to points - see my answer. – PolyGeo Mar 16 '15 at 7:30

You appear to be encountering a known limit when converting line and polygon labels to KML.

This is documented as Technical Article 43000: Labels do not appear in Google Earth after converting to KML:

This is a known limit. Google Earth only displays labels for point features (placemarks). To display labels for line or polygon features in Google Earth, midpoints or centroids for those feature classes must be created as a point layer in ArcMap and imported as a separate layer to Google Earth.

Workarounds using Advanced level, as well as Basic and Standard level licenses, are documented in that Technical Article.
