Any idea how to add a tile layer (XYZ-Layer) using PyQGIS 101 to a map?

Something like osmLayer = QgsXYZLayer(uri.uri(), "OpenStreetMap", "XYZ")

"XYZ" is a raw guess.

Running QGIS 3.6.0

Here is the code which is working for me:

    urlWithParams = 'type=xyz&url=https://a.tile.openstreetmap.org/%7Bz%7D/%7Bx%7D/%7By%7D.png&zmax=19&zmin=0&crs=EPSG3857'
    rlayer = QgsRasterLayer(urlWithParams, 'OpenStreetMap', 'wms')

    if rlayer.isValid():
        QgsProject.instance().addMapLayer(rlayer)
    else:
        print('invalid layer')

and result is:

    Great. this does work. – wambacher Mar 15 at 20:21
  • now i do know what was wrong: i used {z}/[x}/{y} instead of %7Bz%7D/%7Bx%7D/%7By%7D – wambacher Mar 15 at 21:13

You can use this code to add tile layer in the map. This is a script based and to be run in the console, but you can integrate it into Plugin if that's what you are looking for.

  • unfortunately not. I know this script. it is for adding those layers to the Qgis Browser. After that you may user those layers in the QGIS GUI. – wambacher Mar 13 at 16:33
  • What exactly is you use case ? – Ahsan Mukhtar Mar 13 at 16:36
  • Creating a Graph (png) using pyGIS (without GUI). OSM data comes from postGIS and need one single plot per day. Everything is running fine expt the osm layer. see url=wambachers-osm.website/images/osm/snaps_2019/… This all has been done with pyGIS :) exept the OSM layer. – wambacher Mar 13 at 17:17

In a stand-alone/external PyQGIS app that I'm developing I've noticed that wms/xyz tiles that are returned as jpegs don't render on the map canvas but those that return pngs do.

So for example the Google Maps, layer=m which returns pngs does render fine.

provider='type=xyz&url=http://mt1.google.com/vt/lyrs%3Dm%26x%3D%7Bx%7D%26y%3D%7By%7D%26z%3D%7Bz%7D&zmax=19&zmin=0'

But the Google Satellite, layer=s which returns jpegs doesn't render, nor does the Bing layer which also returns jpegs render.

provider='type=xyz&url=http://mt1.google.com/vt/lyrs%3Ds%26x%3D%7Bx%7D%26y%3D%7By%7D%26z%3D%7Bz%7D&zmax=19&zmin=0'

I've tried adding an image format parameter, format=image/jpeg but it doesn't make any difference.

provider='format=image/jpeg&type=xyz&url=http://mt1.google.com/vt/lyrs%3Ds%26x%3D%7Bx%7D%26y%3D%7By%7D%26z%3D%7Bz%7D&zmax=19&zmin=0'

I used Fiddler on Windows to confirm that there were no network issues with the Google Satellite requests and I can see the jpeg tiles being returned successfully. It's actually how I first noticed that the working layers were returning pngs and the non-working layers were all returning jpegs.

Is there some parameter I haven't set for the raster layer to ensure that jpeg tiles are rendered?

The same wms/xyz tile URI, and without the format parameter works fine in QGIS itself, just not in my stand-alone PyQGIS app.

I'm using QGIS 3.4.
