File extension for Microsoft batch files

Batch files are text-based scripts that are executed by the command processor (cmd.exe on DOS, OS/2 and Windows). They usually have the extension .bat or .cmd.

Using batch files or batch programs or scripts, you can simplify routine or repeat tasks. A batch file is an unformatted text file that contains one or more commands and has a .bat or .cmd or .btm file name extension. When you type the filename at the command prompt, cmd.exe runs the commands sequentially as they appear in the file.
