For the last few days I tried to open .las Files from my work into QGIS. I have heard that the newest version of QGIS is able to open .las .laz files without any problem. The problem is that the whenever I try to drag down the .las files into QGIS, the Data wont show any XYZ or RGB attributes.

A colleague of tried to open the files in Geograf and it works just fine. I am not sure what the problem is.

Does anyone have similar problem with this?

  • When you open a las file with QGIS it creates a folder ept_*filename* in the las file folder's. If you open the ept.json who is in this folder and look in the "schema" part the fields X,Y,Z and R,G,B appear and are their min and max values consistent?

  • @PaskalvinPutraBaruna It's strange that you don't have any ept.json file. Do you only see the las bbox and no points ? If so, look this question: gis.stackexchange.com/questions/423581/…

  • I checked up the las file version, v1.1 was supported well with QGIS3.22, But v1.2 was loaded unnormally - no data after decoding. Is QGIS not fit for different versions of las? Commented Jun 29, 2022 at 8:08

Im using QGIS 3.28. I had this problem initially - I would load the file via the Point Cloud tool in the Data Source Manager. The file was located on a network file share.

The file would load, but only show the Extent and no attributes available, as per the OP's problem. The indexing process would complete very quickly, but no folders created on the network share.

I copied the file to my local D drive. Upon loading into QGIS, the indexing process took significantly longer. During the indexing, a folder was created on the drive, and then - when completed, the folder was removed and replaced by a file called "<laz_filename>.copc.laz

The file in QGIS now showed all the points and i was able to style correctly.

Im not 100% sure why there was a difference, but the root cause was the network share. I replicated the problem by using a different drive and folder path that had less characters, but still the same problem, the indexing doesn't run properly and it doesn't produce the copc.laz file.

So for now, the solution is to use a local drive.
